Portions of the book—parts of the the wonderful flight to the mushroom planet, the way the invitation is issued to only boys, not girls, the various expressions used by the boys that would have seemed dated in The Andy Griffith Show— have not necessarily aged well. I guess I was just so accustomed to the idea that it didn’t seem like a problem. All comments must meet the community standards outlined in Tor.
I’m glad I did! This book would be a fun art integration. When I mentioned The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet, everyone stared at me like I was nuts, but it made me want to go back and find it.

Science fiction is a perfect genre for children to read. There was rich vocabulary and terminology used throughout the novel, which would be great for fluent readers looking for something more challenging at their reading level. I need to sit down and re-read this one day, since it’s one of the more surreal and magical children’s books out there.

Surprisingly, the muushroom is close woncerful Earth and the boys discover things they were never expecting.
I suspect the sequels were written as an afterthought when this first book was a success. There are no “Do Overs” on Good Reads. Thanks for telling us about the problem. He refits their spaceship, giving them some special fuel he invented to power the wonderful flight to the mushroom planet, and tells them to fly to the mushroom planet after getting their parents’ permission.
