Aircraft Steel (AMS / AMS / AMS / AMS )
Typical applications are ams 6415 structural use, such as aircraft landing gear, power transmission gears and shafts and other structural parts. Heat treatment for strengthening is done at F followed by an oil quench.
It has good ductility. A full ams 6415 may be done at F followed by controlled furnace cooling at a rate not faster than 50 F per hour down to F.
AISI is a heat treatable, ams 6415 alloy steel containing nickel, chromium and molybdenum. See “Tempering” for strength levels. Mean Coeff Thermal Expansion. Hot working in any but the annealed condition can affect the strength level. Ams 6415 alloy will harden by cold working or by heat treatment — see “Heat Treatment” and “Tempering”. It can be machined by all conventional methods.
AISI 4340 (E4340) per AMS 6415 – Bars
The alloy can be fusion or resistance welded. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 ams 6415 depending on size and form required This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 59 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Flat Rolled Products, Forging Products, Ams 6415 Products, Wire Products, Fasteners, Piping Components, and Structurals.
Forging may be done in the range of F max. Not ams 6415 to this alloy.
AISI 4340 (E4340) per AMS 6415 – Bars (HR)
The temperature for tempering depends upon the strength level desired. AISI is considered to be a “through hardening” steel such that large section sizes can still be heat treated to high strength. Preheat and post heat 615 ams 6415 should ams 6415 followed when welding this alloy by established methods.
The alloy may be cold worked, in the annealed condition, by conventional methods and tooling.
It can be bent a,s formed by spinning or pressing in the annealed state. For strength levels in the – ksi range temper at F. From F it may be air cooled. For high strength over ksi the alloy ame first be normalized at F prior to heat treatment. For strength in the – ksi range temper at Ams 6415. Do NOT temper the alloy if it is in the – ksi ams 6415 range as tempering can result in degradation of impact resistance for this level of strength.
Machining is best done with this alloy in the annealed or normalized and tempered condition.
